(More) Files on Google

The search is on for adding editable documents. Like, a spreadsheet you can update.

First, using the “Add Google File” button above the TinyMCE editor.

  • A window came up and said “Loading”, presumably loading my Google docs or drive directory.  After a long wait, I gave up.
  • Trying again…after fixing up the credentials*

  • The ‘getting started.pdf’ file was the only one that was listed in the Add Google File window; perhaps it was the only ‘Public’ document in my drive.  But this time I logged in as djcrowley.mclean when I clicked Add Google File, and it listed all of my drive files.  here is a file that I chose “Embed”.  Although it finally works, it only gives me an Embed.  During set up, the only other option is ‘Viewer File Link’.  That’s shown below the Embed.  (The ‘Download File Link’ option requires an Enterprise license!!).

Second error:

  • After getting the backend credentials to work, I could add the link.  But when I clicked the link, I was taken through a set of Google authorization steps that I didn’t want to see.  because: I set up the original auth using djcrowley.mclean; I logged in to WP using my WP dj1480 account.  I could have but didn’t use the ‘login with google’ button.

 

(1) The old credentials contained the urls for the http/ site, so they didn’t work once I had changed to a https:// site

 

Files as attachments

It turns out that this is the third post about document links.  They all show pretty much the same things. This is a link to a file in the /media library.  The file was uploaded and the link was created by “Add Media”

Next, the same link was created as an attachment to the post via ‘Add Media’.  This constructs a child post dedicated to the file.  It would be nice if this child could link to a viewer, or even better if I could ’embed-any-document’; but this doesn’t happen.  Instead, the child post consists of a link for you to download the file.  The child post is created automatically, and so far I don’t know how to add/modify the contents.

2nd post with Doc links

Previously, I posted about file-links.  Next I’ll post about file-links, using embed-any-document

Picking up where I left off, it seems that Fileway produces nice lists of files, but when you click on the title it always downloads the file.  Embed-any-doc utilizes viewers really nicely,

Let’s try a different document.

This next link points to a file in the media library.  However, the link fails!  Maybe it has something to do with the fact that it’s part of an mDocs library.

Three blind media

Gosh, this is what a post looks like!  I even added a Featured Image for the post.

This one will have links to 3 pieces of media i.e. pdf and doc files. Let’s see how it goes!   So, using the ‘Add Media’ button, I… added media.  This looks like an absolute link, btw.  Also, I added a description and a caption.  And, I selected an option about the size of the thumbnail.  So, lets see!

Clicking on the link opens the media in a new page.  But there’s no description, no caption.  Not sure how to make those happen with Media links.  Worth noting, the Add Media button does not insert a shortcode; it just adds the Text, with the link.  Notably, the url point to the location “/wp/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/”.  The url is driven by the date the file was uploaded into this post.

(I switched to the Page Builder visual editor, then inserted a second row.)
(subsequently, I switched back.  After switching, I had to Update the page in order to see the new edits.)

First lets try a FileAway list of files in the FA library.  Unfortunately FileAway forces a defaults to download of the file rather than opening it, like Media.  This used ‘Lightbox=pdfs’ and  boxtheme=yang.

Lesson learned: If the ‘width’ parameter isn’t specified for a List, the page text will wrap around the box.  If the insert is a Table, the width defaults to 100% so there’s no wraparound.

Another lesson: In the settings of FileAway, you can add a list of filetypes that should be opened in another tab. Specifying .pdf in the settings, all pdf files are opened in the browser.  But if the browser doesn’t have that viewer, you’re out of luck and the file will simply download.
