The free version of Embed Any Doc can embed documents from the local media library, or any page/document with a URL. The premium version can embed documents from Google Drive, Dropbox, or Box. Either way, the shortcode ultimately uses the URL of the document (a complete URL, not a relative one).

For .doc and .xls files you can choose either the Google app or Office Online app to present the document. PDF files are always shown using the Google PDF viewer.  This is an excellent capability, because it doesn’t depend on a browser plugin.

Sample 1: An Excel file

In the Office Online viewer you can navigate an Excel file like a worksheet, although you can’t manipulate it or even sort it  The Google viewer is akin to viewing a Print version of the document. In the embedded frame, both apps have a link that opens the viewer directly in the web app, in a new tab. You are still working with a read-only document, but there are buttons that will transfer the file to your Google Drive or to OneDrive (assuming you have an account, and are logged in to it) and launch the full-function Sheets or Excel.  Although you can now update the file, it’s no longer on the web server.

This example uses the Office Online viewer to display a file from the Media Library:

Here is the same file, using the Google Sheets viewer

Sample 2: a Word file

In both the Office Online and the Google apps, Word files are presented as read-only documents as if they had been converted to PDFs. The Google app looks just like the Office app in this case, which is a big improvement over the poor job Google does with XLS files. In either case, the DOC file can be opened in a full view as a step toward printing, downloading, or transferring to Drive/OneDrive just like the XLS file viewer.

This example uses the Office Online viewer.

Sample 3: a PDF file

PDFs are always opened in the Google pdf viewer.  This overcomes all the problems associated with configurations of browser-based or desktop-based viewers.
